Dental care for Children

Dental Care For Children Birmingham AL

At Comfort Plus Family Dentistry, Dr. Gutti and her team offer dental treatment to children of all ages in the Birmingham area. The best dental treatment for children is prevention by providing them early dental care.

Infant care: Baby teeth, even though temporary, are very important as your child learns how to chew food and talk. Baby teeth are the guide for the eruption of the permanent teeth. As the first teeth come in around when your child is 6-7 months old, you need to clean them with a soft cloth. As your baby grows older, you can start using a soft bristle toothbrush with a very small amount of fluoride-free toothpaste. If you are unsure or need help, Dr. Gutti can guide you in the right direction.

First Dental Visit: Dr. Gutti recommends your child’s first dental check up at age 2. This appointment is very important as your child is interacting with our hygienist and Dr. Gutti and learning to be independent. At this appointment, Dr. Gutti will discuss with you some important oral health topics about your child. For your child, this appointment is all about getting used to the new environment and some new people.

Ages 3 and Up: By age 3, your child already has their baby teeth. From this visit, if proper oral hygiene habits and good eating habits are practiced, your child will start feeling very comfortable with Dr. Gutti and will begin understanding how to take care of themselves, brush etc. Dr. Gutti recommends topical fluoride treatment for kids to keep them cavity free.

Here are a few other tips to keep your child’s teeth cavity-free:

  • Avoid putting your child to bed with a bottle/Sippy cup filled with any liquid other than plain water;
  • Avoid giving too many sugary drinks during the day,
  • Avoid giving your child a pacifier with sugar, honey or any kind of sweet liquid dipped on it.
  • Make sure that your child is drinking fluoridated water.

The best way to teach about dental health and proper oral care to your child is to teach and show them how to brush and floss from an early age.
